Skateboard grind deterrents — the architectural answer

How a grind deterrent works
A skateboarder grinds by sliding the trucks (the metal axle assembly) along a flat or rounded edge — typically a granite ledge, painted metal handrail, or concrete bench seat front. Grinding damages the substrate (chips granite, scrapes paint, gouges concrete) and creates public-realm liability when the surface fails. Grind deterrents interrupt the slide path by introducing a 6-15 mm protrusion that the truck cannot pass over — not high enough to be a tripping hazard for pedestrians, high enough to make grinding mechanically impossible.
Material spec for Canadian climate
For inland Canadian deployments (Calgary, Edmonton, Saskatoon, Winnipeg, Regina, Sudbury), our default is 304 stainless — 25-year warranty against pitting, $24-32 per stud installed. For coastal sites within 25 km of salt-water exposure (Vancouver, Victoria, Halifax, St. John's, Charlottetown, Saint John) we spec 316L marine-grade — lifetime corrosion warranty, $32-45 per stud installed. Bronze patina is also available for heritage and aesthetic-priority sites at $45-60 per stud installed.
