Stainless Steel Skateboard Deterrents

Stainless steel skateboard deterrents in 304 and 316L marine-grade with lifetime corrosion warranty. Climate-engineered for every Canadian frost zone.

Stainless steel skateboard deterrents — grade matters

When Canadian property managers, transit authorities, and municipal procurement officers search for stainless steel skateboard deterrents, the question that decides the spec is 304 vs 316L. Both are stainless. Only one survives a Canadian winter on the BC, Atlantic, or St. Lawrence coast. The wrong grade pits within 5–7 years and gets condemned at the next infrastructure inspection — a costly re-spec the city pays for twice.

304 vs 316L marine-grade — the Canadian rule of thumb

304 stainless is the default North American architectural grade. It performs well on inland sites with low chloride exposure: Calgary, Edmonton, Saskatoon, Winnipeg, Regina, Sudbury. We supply 304 as standard for these climates and warranty it for 25 years against pitting.

316L marine-grade adds 2–3% molybdenum to resist chloride attack from salt-water aerosols and road de-icing salt. It is mandatory for any site within 25 km of salt-water exposure (Vancouver, Victoria, Halifax, St. John’s, Charlottetown, Saint John, Saguenay, Sept-Îles) and strongly recommended for Quebec / Ontario sites within 5 km of a major highway that is salt-treated November–April. We carry lifetime corrosion warranty on 316L structural elements.

Where stainless skateboard deterrents are specified

  • Transit authorities — TTC, STM, OC Transpo, BC Transit, Calgary Transit — spec 316L on platform-edge benches and shelter handrails because road-salt aerosol is constant
  • Heritage properties — Parks Canada, Heritage Toronto, Ville de Québec heritage districts — require bronze patina or 316L brushed finish for visual approval; 304 polished is rejected on heritage submissions
  • Coastal commercial real estate — Vancouver, Halifax, St. John’s waterfront properties spec 316L by default in their RFPs
  • Schools and universities — most spec 304 for cost (low chloride exposure on inland campuses) but UBC, Dalhousie, MUN spec 316L

Finishes available in stainless

  • Polished 304 / 316L — mirror finish, modern commercial, retail storefronts
  • Brushed 304 / 316L — satin texture, hides fingerprints, default for transit and corporate campuses
  • Bead-blasted 316L — matte texture, heritage-approval finish
  • Powder-coated over 316L core — custom RAL color, used for branded retail (still 316L underneath for corrosion warranty)

Procurement and lead times

304 stainless is stocked in Toronto, Vancouver, and Montréal for 5–7 business day lead times. 316L marine-grade is made-to-order with 3–4 week lead times — plan procurement accordingly for spring install windows. We respond to RFPs within 5 business days with stamped engineering and the corrosion-class certificate for the destination city. Request a quote with your destination postal code and we’ll spec the correct grade.
